HP W1840A / W1840X Compatible Toner: What to Stock for the LaserJet M220 & MFP M246

A new platform is the easiest time to win consumable share — the installed base is being built right now and nobody has locked in a supplier yet. The catch is that a two-SKU range has one decision that matters, and it is not the one most buyers spend their time on.

The two cartridges, side by side

Both are black, both fit the same machines, and both are rated 31 ppm at 600 × 600 dpi on a device with a 20,000-page monthly duty cycle. The only difference in the table is capacity.

W1840X is the SKU that will move

2,300 pages against 1,050 is a 2.2× difference, and the arithmetic lands in a place that matters for this class of device. The M220 and M246 are small-office and home-office machines: they print in bursts, they get bought on price, and then they get used for years. At 20,000 pages a month of rated duty cycle — well above what a small office actually runs — even a modest real-world volume turns a standard cartridge over quickly.

Every extra cartridge change is a consumable the customer has to remember to buy and a decision they make in front of a search box. High yield removes roughly half those decisions. That is why W1840X is the SKU to lead with and to hold stock on, with W1840A as the entry price point for buyers who compare on unit cost rather than cost per page.

Remanufactured or patented new-built

This is the decision people actually agonise over, and it is simpler than it looks. Both builds run to the same 1,050 / 2,300 page ratings and fit the same machines. They differ in how they are made and what you can sell them for.

Remanufactured wins the price-sensitive end of the market and the sustainability conversation, which is increasingly a procurement line item rather than a nice-to-have. Patented new-built is what you quote when the buyer asks for a patent position — no reused core, the chip is read the moment the cartridge goes in, and the listing does not carry the compliance risk a rebuilt core can.

2. W1840X over W1840A. The 2.2× yield is the whole argument. Lead with it.
3. Two builds, one listing. Quoting both builds from a single page lets the buyer choose their own risk posture instead of walking to a competitor who only offers one.
4. Early stock. This is a September 2026 platform. Supply is still settling, and the partner who can ship in the first weeks of the installed base being built is the one who gets reordered by default.
