The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 4701dn / 4701dw and the MFP 4801f / 4801fw sit in the mid-size workgroup band: 35 ppm in colour, 1,200 × 1,200 dpi, and a monthly duty cycle of up to 100,000 pages. They are sold into businesses that print real colour volume — proposals, reports, marketing collateral — and the cartridge choice is where the running cost is decided.
HP splits the supply into two yields. Confusing them is the single most common ordering mistake on this platform, so it is worth being precise.

The 4701 and 4801 share a cartridge set, which is helpful: one stock position covers both the single-function and the MFP install base.
Cost per page is where 240X wins
The 240X costs more per cartridge and less per page. On a machine with a 100,000-page monthly duty rating, the second number is the one the customer's finance team cares about, and it is also the one that protects you from price-only competition.
- 240A suits low-colour offices — a handful of colour pages a day, mostly mono. Lower ticket price, faster turnover.
- 240X suits real colour volume — roughly four times the pages between changes, fewer interventions, less downtime.
- Stock both — the two are not substitutes in the buyer's mind; they are a good-better choice, and having both lets you win either conversation.
Don't confuse 240A / 240X with W9230MC
The W9230MC–W9233MC set is a different thing entirely: it is the managed cartridge set for the Color LaserJet Enterprise X45135dn and MFP X47635f, and it is a separate stock position.
