The HP LaserJet Enterprise 5501 / 5502 print at 52 pages per minute and anchor HP's new enterprise A4 range for small teams. The MFP 5601 / 5602 carry the same cartridge. And that cartridge — W1590A, 5,000 pages — replaces the CF289A / CF289X (89A) franchise: one of the highest-volume enterprise compatibles the market has ever stocked.
Successor, not cross-compatible
The first thing to get right: W1590A does not fit 89A printers, and 89A does not fit the new ones. The platform moved to a developer-roller (DR) architecture with non-magnetic chemical toner and optical toner-level sensing. Structurally it is a different cartridge. The connection is the installed base: as Enterprise 5501 / 5502 units ship into offices, demand migrates from 89A to W1590A — and because W1590 is a worldwide SKU with no regional variants, one stock build serves every market.

What actually changed inside
- MR to DR. Magnetic-roller architecture out, developer-roller in, with optical toner-level sensing replacing the old capacitive method.
- Physical toner to chemical toner. Finer particles, lower fusing temperature, roughly 11% more pages per gram of toner.
- A new OPC drive head. Our build uses an own-patent gear design — the second driving tooth is a dot-style profile — instead of copying OEM claims.
Two build options, one part number
We supply W1590A (5,000 pages, with chip) in two structures: a patented-structure build for patent-sensitive online listings, and an OEM-structure clone build for price-driven offline tenders. Same page-yield commitment — 100% of OEM rating with no fade across the cartridge life — so you can position by channel without splitting your stock logic.
How to position the migration
- Start now, not at peak demand. Early movers on a new enterprise SKU capture the search traffic while competition is thin — the same pattern every generation reset has produced.
- Lead with the printer, not the cartridge. Buyers search "LaserJet Enterprise 5501 toner" long before they search "W1590A" — make sure your listings and pages name the machines.
- Sample the chip behaviour first. Install recognition and zero error codes across the cartridge life is the make-or-break attribute on a brand-new platform. Our chip is permanent-memory serial-number based, refreshed regularly, with stock held.
- Price on total cost. 100% OEM-equivalent yield and no fade in the second half of the cartridge is the argument that beats a cheaper 90%-yield alternative.
