If you sell into architecture, engineering, GIS, signage or reprographic channels, wide-format plotter ink is a different beast from desktop inkjet. The cartridges are larger, pigment-heavy, and — on Epson and Canon at least — tied to a specific sales region. Below we break down the three compatible families we stock from our partner factory network: HP DesignJet, Epson SureColor SC-T and Canon imagePROGRAF.
HP DesignJet wide-format ink (712 / 727 / 728 / 730 / 738)
HP's DesignJet technical plotters use pigment ink in a color set that scales with the machine class — from four-color (B/C/M/Y) on the entry T210–T650, up to six-color (adding Photo Black, Matte Black and Grey) on the production T1600/T1700/T2600.

Epson SureColor SC-T wide-format ink (T40x / T41x / T50x)
Epson splits the SC-T ink family by sales region, not just by printer model. The same SC-T3400, for example, takes T41F in Europe but T41W in Canada. Always match the cartridge number to the printer's sales region.

Canon imagePROGRAF wide-format ink (PFI-030 / PFI-120 / PFI-320)
Canon's PFI series covers the TA / TM / GP technical line. The three families fit the same printers but differ in ink volume — pick by monthly print volume.

Color set is Matte Black, Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow across all three. The 300 ml PFI-320 is the cost-efficient choice for high-volume reprographics.
What to check when buying compatible wide-format ink
- Region first. On Epson SC-T and Canon PFI ranges, the cartridge number is region-locked. Confirm the printer's sales region before quoting — a T41F will not serve a Canadian SC-T3400.
- Color set. Entry plotters are 4-color; production DesignJets add Photo Black, Matte Black and Grey. Match the set to the printer or colors will be rejected.
- Capacity vs volume. Higher-capacity cartridges (HP 730 300 ml, Canon PFI-320 300 ml) lower cost per ml — worth it above moderate monthly throughput.
- Ink type. These are pigment inks for water-resistant, lightfast technical output. Verify pigment formulation and nozzle consistency so page 500 looks like page 1.
- Batch traceability. Wide-format rejects are expensive. Buy from a supplier that can trace any field issue back to a production batch and ship replacement lots quickly.
