Canon CN8 Compatible Ink Cartridges: PG-585XL, PG-595XL & CL-586XL Explained

If you have been quoting Canon PIXMA TS-series printers lately — the TS7550i, TS7650i, TR7160, TS7770 and their siblings — you have met the CN8 ink cartridge generation already. It replaced the familiar regional PG-5xx / CL-5xx numbering with a new chip, a new housing and a newly developed integrated print head, and it ships as 21 SKUs grouped across seven regions.

What is the CN8 generation?

CN8 is Canon's current line of dye-based, print-head-integrated ink cartridges. Three things changed at once versus the previous generation:

• New chip. Each cartridge carries a new-generation chip — the printer reads it directly, so page counters and ink-level reporting behave like OEM.
• New housing. A redesigned cartridge body — not a re-shell of the old PG-5xx / CL-5xx frame.
• New print head. The integrated head is newly developed, dye-based, and tuned for stable output that resists nozzle blockage.

Because the head is integrated, every cartridge is effectively a fresh print engine — which is exactly why chip recognition and head quality matter more than with tank-fed ink systems.

PG-585XL vs PG-595XL: same yield, different printers

The two flagship black XL cartridges confuse a lot of buyers, because the specification looks identical:

• PG-585XL — black, 500 pages / 22 ml, pairs with the TS7650i / TS7750i (Europe) and TS7760 / TR7860 (Australia).
• PG-595XL — black, 500 pages / 22 ml, pairs with the TS7550i / TS6550i / TS4150i / TS4151i (Europe) and TS5560 / TR7160 / TS4060 (Australia).

Same yield, same ink volume — the difference is printer pairing. Canon assigns cartridge families per printer model line, so the correct question is never "which PG is better" but "which PG does my printer take". The same logic applies to the tri-color CL-586XL (400 pages / 21 ml), which covers the printers of both black lines combined. OEM reference numbers: PG-585 = 6205C001, PG-585XL = 6204C001, CL-586 = 6227C001, CL-586XL = 6226C001.

What to check when buying compatible CN8

1. Chip first. The CN8 chip is new-generation — a compatible cartridge without a working chip is a support ticket waiting to happen. Ask your supplier to confirm chip recognition on the exact printer model you sell into.
2. Real page yield. On the European flagship SKUs, OEM rates the black XL at 300 pages; our compatible PG-585XL / PG-595XL run 500 pages at 22 ml. Verify quoted yields against ink volume, not against the OEM number alone.
3. Print-head quality. Because head and ink are one unit, dye-based formulation and nozzle consistency decide whether page 400 looks like page 1. Batch traceability lets you map any field issue back to a production batch.
4. Regional correctness. The cartridge must match the printer's sales region — a PG-285XL will not serve a European TS7550i channel. Buy by printer model, not by number pattern.
