What does a drum unit do?
The drum is a photosensitive cylinder that transfers toner onto the paper using static electricity. In most HP and Canon laser printers, the drum is built into the toner cartridge — you replace it every time you change the cartridge. In many Brother printers and most office copiers, the drum is a separate part (e.g. Brother DR-620, DR-1050) that lasts several toner cycles.

How long does a drum last?
A separate drum unit typically lasts 3–5 toner cartridge cycles (for example, 12,000 pages on a Brother DR-620). Its life depends on: print volume, paper quality, environmental dust, and how often the printer sits idle. High-capacity office machines may need a drum replacement every 20,000–60,000 pages.
Warning signs it's time to replace the drum
- Vertical streaks or lines repeating down the page at regular intervals
- Faded or blotchy prints, especially toward the edges
- Gray background / toner dust on blank areas
- The printer shows a "Replace Drum" or "Drum Life End" message
- Repeated spots at the same position on every page
Toner vs drum: know the difference
If print quality degrades, first rule out the toner (cheaper and easier to swap). A simple test: if the defect repeats at a distance matching the cartridge's drum circumference, it's the drum; if the pattern is random, it's likely the toner.
