Roland DG has shipped several generations of eco-solvent printers, and each generation takes its own cartridge family. Buying by price or by "it looks the same" is how shops end up with crates of ink they cannot use. The good news: the mapping is simple once you know the machine.

Why TR2 is the one most shops ask for
TrueVIS SG2 and VG2 are the workhorses in sign shops today, and TR2 is where the extended gamut lives: alongside the standard CMYK plus Light Cyan, Light Magenta and Light Black, TR2 adds Orange, Green and Transparency. Orange and Green widen the printable colour space for brand-colour matching; Transparency supports backlit film work. Most generic suppliers stock only the basic set — carrying all ten is a genuine way to be the one-stop source.

220 ml or 440 ml?
On the ESL generations both exist because shops split by workload: 220 ml suits low-volume or mixed-colour users who do not want ink sitting in the machine, while 440 ml cuts changeovers on long production runs. If your customers run long wraps or banner jobs, the 440 ml version is the one that keeps the machine printing.
What to check before ordering compatible Roland ink
- Chip recognition. The cartridge must be read by the machine without workarounds — all of ours are chip-equipped.
- Colour set, not just black. Confirm the light and extended colours you actually need; a partial set forces a second order.
- Machine generation. SG3 is TE2-5, not TR2 — the single most common ordering mistake on this platform.
- Ink chemistry. These machines are designed around eco-solvent ink; stick with eco-solvent for outdoor durability.
