HP launched its new A4 monochrome range in 2026 for medium workgroups and small businesses. In EMEA the printer family is the HP LaserJet Pro 4007dn / 4007dw with the MFP 4113, and the cartridges are W1620A (3,000 pages) and W1620X (10,000 pages). The previous generation — W1490 — is in its mature phase; W1620 is at the start of a lifecycle that is expected to run well into the next decade.
The platform changed, not just the part number
The important shift is underneath the shell. The new cartridges move from the old magnetic-roller architecture with physical toner to a developer-roller (DR) design using non-magnetic toner with optical toner-level sensing. That has three consequences you can feel in the field:
- Fusing temperature drops — lower energy per page, and the print holds on both 110V and 220V machines.
- More pages per gram of toner — roughly 11% more than the previous generation, which is where the cost-per-page story actually comes from.
- A structurally different cartridge — so a supplier who is still shipping a W1490-style build into a W1620 channel is selling you a mismatch.

Why the new generation is priced above W1480 / W1490
This is the question every buyer asks, and it deserves a straight answer. You are paying for two things:
- Materials. Chemical toner instead of physical toner — finer particles, tighter specification, lower fusing temperature.
- Structure. A new OPC drive-head design instead of the previous universal-tooth arrangement.
You get it back in total cost: 100% of the OEM rated page yield with no density fade across the cartridge life, fewer cartridge changes, and less downtime on machines that print 45 pages a minute.
Why "own patent" matters more than usual on this one
If you sell on marketplaces, the risk profile of a new-generation cartridge is different from a mature one: OEM patent claims are freshest right after launch, and listings are easiest to take down early. Practically, that means you can list it online as well as sell it offline, and you are not competing purely on price against clones that may not survive a takedown notice.
What to check before you buy W1620 compatible
- Chip first. A permanent-memory serial-number chip that is recognised on install and reports no errors across the whole life. Ask whether serial numbers are refreshed and whether chip stock is held.
- Yield claims against reality. Insist on full OEM-equivalent yield and no fade in the second half of the cartridge — that is where generic physical-toner builds usually fall to around 90%.
- Print samples, not spec sheets. Look at text edges (no black edges, no irregular horizontal bands) and a 30% grey scale (should stay cleanly recognisable).
- Region lock. W1620 is the EMEA line. The same printer bought in North America takes W1610 and in China takes W1640 — buy by printer model and market, not by number pattern.
