Brother's key design feature: toner and drum are separate
Most Brother laser machines use a separate drum unit (DR series) that lasts several toner cycles. The TN cartridge is just the toner container — which is exactly why Brother-compatible toner is such a safe, high-value buy: the consumable is simple, standardized, and doesn't affect the drum's lifespan. Brother printers distinguish clearly: "Replace Toner" means install a new TN cartridge. A drum lasts 4–8 toner cycles, so replacing it every time you change toner is a common (and expensive) mistake. When the drum warning appears, a compatible drum costs a fraction of the original and resets the counter the same way.
