The number isn't a lie; it's measured under a strict standard that almost nobody explains. Once you understand yield, you'll stop overpaying and start predicting exactly when to reorder.
The 5% coverage rule: the hidden key
Manufacturer yields are measured on a test document where toner covers only 5% of the page — roughly a standard business letter with a few lines of text and no graphics. Print a page of dense spreadsheets, images, or a full-page logo and your coverage jumps to 30–80%, burning toner 6–16× faster. That's why a "3,000-page" cartridge dies at 800 pages of PowerPoint handouts.
Quick mental math: if you print mostly text, multiply the stated yield by 0.7–0.9. If you print graphics or presentations, divide it by 2–4. If you print photos or full-bleed marketing materials, expect a fraction of the stated number.
ISO 19752 vs 19798: the standards behind the numbers
- ISO/IEC 19752 — monochrome laser toner: the classic 5% coverage test page
- ISO/IEC 19798 — color laser toner: each color measured separately at 5% coverage
- ISO/IEC 24712 — the color test suite used for ink cartridges
These are international standards, so a compatible cartridge claiming "1,500 pages" is measured the same way as the original — it's an apples-to-apples comparison, not marketing fluff.
Standard vs high-yield: the cost-per-page math
Take a common example: an original standard cartridge at $90 for 1,500 pages = 6.0¢ per page. The high-yield version at $130 for 3,500 pages = 3.7¢ per page. The high-yield version costs 44% more but delivers 40% lower per-page cost. On a compatible cartridge, the same ratio holds — the high-capacity version is almost always the better deal for anything beyond light use.

- Divide pages printed by cartridges used — that's your real per-cartridge yield
- Compare against the stated yield to learn your office's effective coverage — then size future orders accordingly
