PLA vs ABS vs PETG: Which 3D Printer Filament Should You Use?

If you own an FDM printer, three names come up in almost every "what should I print with?" debate: PLA, ABS and PETG. They're the three workhorses of desktop 3D printing — but they behave nothing alike. Get the material wrong and you'll fight warping, clogged nozzles or parts that melt on a sunny windowsill. This guide gives you a clean, buyer-first comparison so you can stock the right spools.

What is PLA (Polylactic Acid)?

PLA is the default for a reason. It prints at a low 190–220 °C, barely warps, and gives off little more than a faint sweet smell. Being corn-starch-derived, it's also the most environmentally friendly of the three. The trade-off is mechanical: PLA is brittle and softens around 60 °C, so it's a poor choice for parts that take heat, load or impact.

What is ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)?

ABS is the tough one. It prints hotter (230–250 °C) on a heated bed (90–110 °C), and ideally inside an enclosure — without one it warps and cracks as it cools. It gives off noticeable fumes (print in a ventilated space), but it pays you back with high impact strength, a service temperature around 100 °C, and fantastic post-processing: you can sand it and vapor-smooth it with acetone for a glossy, injection-molded look.

Best for: durable functional parts, automotive and enclosure components, Lego-style interlocking prints, anything that needs to survive heat or abuse. We currently focus our catalog on PETG, PLA and Silk PLA, but ABS is available as an OEM/ODM custom run for resellers and print farms.

What is PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol)?

PETG is the all-rounder that stole ABS's crown for most users. It prints almost as easily as PLA but adds real strength, impact resistance and a service temperature up to ~80 °C. It's slightly hygroscopic (seal it when not in use, dry before long prints) and can string a little if retraction isn't tuned — but for functional parts it's the sweet spot. It's also food-contact-adjacent and widely used for brackets, enclosures and outdoor prints.

So which one should you choose?

A practical rule of thumb:

  • PLA — if it just needs to look right, sit on a desk, or be printed fast and cheap.
  • PETG — if it has to survive being used, dropped, washed or heated to ~80 °C. This is the default for most "real" parts.
  • ABS — if you need maximum impact strength, ~100 °C heat resistance, or an acetone-smoothed finish, and you can print enclosed.
