New to 3D printing, or just standing in front of a wall of spools? The three materials you'll meet first are PLA, PETG and Silk PLA. They all print on the same 1.75 mm FDM printers, but they behave very differently. This guide cuts through the marketing so you can pick the right one — and buy it in bulk without guessing.
What is PLA (Polylactic Acid)?
PLA is the beginner-friendly default. It prints at low temperatures (190–220 °C), barely warps, and gives off little odor. It's made from corn-starch-derived resin, so it's also the most environmentally friendly of the three. The trade-off: PLA is brittle and softens around 60 °C, so it's not for parts that take heat or mechanical stress.
Best for: prototypes, display models, toys, educational prints, and high-speed draft work. See our White PLA 1.75mm 1kg spool →
What is PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol)?
PETG is the all-rounder. It keeps PLA's easy printing but adds real strength, impact resistance and a service temperature up to ~80 °C. It's slightly hygroscopic (it likes to absorb moisture, so keep it sealed), and it can string a little if your retraction isn't tuned — but for functional parts it's hard to beat. It's also food-contact-adjacent and widely used for enclosures, brackets and outdoor parts.
Best for: mechanical parts, brackets, jigs, enclosures, outdoor and semi-durable prints. Browse all 28 PETG colors →
What is Silk PLA?
Silk PLA is PLA with a metallic/pearlescent additive that produces a shiny, almost anodized-aluminum finish straight off the bed — no post-processing required. It prints like PLA but is a touch more brittle. It's the go-to for display pieces, cosplay, jewelry prototypes and anything where looks matter more than load-bearing strength.
Best for: display models, gifts, cosplay, decorative prints. See Silk Gold PLA →
PETG vs PLA vs Silk PLA: quick comparison

| Moisture sensitive | Low | Medium (dry before use) | Low |
| Best for | Prototypes, toys | Functional parts | Display, decor |
So which one should you choose?
A simple rule of thumb: PLA if it just needs to look right or sit on a desk; PETG if it has to survive being used, dropped or heated; Silk PLA if the finish is the whole point. Many print farms keep all three in stock because different orders need different materials — and because color range drives repeat business.
Our 3D printing filament catalog covers 43 factory-direct SKUs: 28 PETG colors, 12 PLA colors and 3 Silk PLA finishes, all 1.75 mm / 1 kg, ±0.02 mm tolerance, vacuum-sealed. OEM/ODM private label and wholesale MOQ are available for resellers and print farms.
