The fastest way to ruin a print isn't a bad slicer profile — it's wet filament. Moisture absorbed by plastic turns to steam in the hot nozzle, causing pops, bubbles, weak layers and rough surfaces. The good news: proper storage is cheap, simple and pays for itself in wasted prints avoided. Here's how to keep PETG, PLA and Silk PLA ready to print.
Why moisture kills prints
Most 3D printing plastics are at least slightly hygroscopic — they pull water from the air. When damp filament enters a 200–250 °C nozzle, the water flash-boils. You hear a faint popping sound and see tiny bubbles in the extruded line. The result is inconsistent extrusion, poor layer bonding, stringing and a cloudy or rough surface finish.
PLA absorbs moisture slowly, PETG faster, and nylon or TPU are the worst offenders. Even "low moisture" materials like PLA will degrade if left out in a humid climate for weeks.

Level 1 storage: reseal the bag
For hobbyists printing a few times a week, the easiest win is to leave unused filament in its original packaging with the desiccant pack included. Squeeze out excess air, zip it closed, and store the bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid garages, basements and sheds unless they are climate-controlled.
Pro tip: write the date you opened the bag on the label. Filament left open for more than 2–3 weeks in humid air usually needs drying before critical prints.
Level 2 storage: a simple dry box
A dry box is any airtight container plus desiccant. A 19 L food-storage container with a rubber gasket and four 100 g silica-gel packs will hold 6–10 spools and keep humidity below 20% for weeks. Add a cheap digital hygrometer so you can see when it's time to recharge the desiccant.
For active printing, build a pass-through dry box: drill a small hole in the side, feed the filament through a PTFE tube, and print directly from the box. This keeps the spool dry while it is actively being used — the best of both worlds.
Level 3 storage: active filament dryer
If you run a print farm, live in a tropical climate, or print PETG/TPU daily, an active dryer pays for itself. These are essentially low-temperature ovens (40–70 °C) with a fan that circulates dry air through the spool. Popular models hold 1–2 spools and can also feed filament directly to the printer.
Safe drying temperatures:
- PLA: 45–50 °C for 4–6 hours
- PETG: 60–65 °C for 4–6 hours
- Silk PLA: 45–50 °C for 4 hours
Never use a household oven unless you can hold a stable, accurate temperature — it's easy to soften or fuse the spool.
Signs your filament is wet
- Audible popping or hissing from the nozzle
- Rough, foamy or bubbled surface texture
- Increased stringing and blobbing
- Brittle filament that snaps while loading
- Weak layer adhesion and parts that split easily
If you see two or more of these, dry the spool before continuing. Printing with wet PETG is one of the most common causes of "mysterious" print failures.
Buy vacuum-sealed when possible
