Epson EcoTank printers are the most popular refillable inkjet family in the world — and the single most common question we get is: <em>"which ink bottle does my EcoTank take?"</em> This guide clears it up once and for all.
How EcoTank works
Unlike cartridge printers, EcoTank machines use refillable ink tanks. You pour ink from a bottle into the tank, and each bottle lasts a long time — an EcoTank printer's included starter inks can print thousands of pages. The trade-off: you must buy the right ink code, because the bottles and tanks are keyed differently per printer series.
The main Epson ink bottle codes
| Ink Code | Works With (example) | Colors |
| Epson 003 | EcoTank L3110, L3150, L4150, L5190 | BK / C / M / Y |
| Epson 004 | EcoTank L3156, L3250, L3256, L4260 | BK / C / M / Y |
| Epson 664 | EcoTank L6160, L6170, L6190 | BK / C / M / Y |
| Epson 502 / 502XL | WorkForce ET-2760, ET-4760 | BK / C / M / Y |
| Epson BT5000 | EcoTank L14150, L15150, L15160 | BK / C / M / Y |
| Epson BT6000 | EcoTank L6490, L6570, L6580 | BK / C / M / Y |
Codes vary by region — always confirm against your printer's manual or the label inside the ink tank cover.
High-capacity (XL) vs standard bottles
Many Epson codes come in standard and high-capacity (XL) versions, e.g. 664 vs 664 XL. XL bottles hold more ink and cost less per milliliter. For offices with heavy printing, XL is almost always the better value. Wholesale buyers should ask for volume pricing on XL codes — it's where the best per-page savings are.
Compatible EcoTank ink: is it safe?
Quality compatible EcoTank ink is formulated to match Epson's color profile and viscosity. When the ink is made by a reputable factory and filtered to the right particle size, print quality and head life are on par with Epson originals — at a fraction of the price. The critical thing is to use EcoTank-specific compatible ink, not generic bottled ink meant for refilling cartridges.
Refilling tips to protect your printhead
- Only refill when the printer's ink level is low — don't top up mid-tank
- Wipe the tank opening before pouring to keep dust out
- Close the bottle immediately; EcoTank ink dries fast on exposure
- Print at least once a week to keep the printhead from clogging
- Use a compatible bottle with the correct code for your model
EcoTank vs cartridge printers
If you're choosing a printer family for your office: EcoTank-style printers have a higher upfront cost but dramatically lower per-page cost, and they're far better for the environment (no cartridge waste). Cartridge printers are cheaper upfront and simpler, but per-page costs are higher. For high-volume printing, EcoTank wins on total cost of ownership.
