Best 3D Filament for Beginners: Start with PLA, Then PETG

If you have just unboxed your first FDM 3D printer, the first question is usually: which filament should I buy? The short answer: start with PLA. It is the most forgiving material, prints at low temperatures, barely warps and costs less than the engineering-grade options. Once you can reliably print PLA, PETG is the logical next step. Here's how to make that progression without wasting money or spools.

Why PLA is the best beginner filament

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the default material for a reason. It prints at 190–220 °C, sticks to the bed with minimal prep, and produces very little odor. Warping is rare on a clean bed, so your first prints are more likely to finish successfully — and successful first prints are what keep beginners printing.

Other beginner-friendly traits:

  • Low moisture sensitivity: PLA can sit out longer than PETG before drying is needed.
  • Wide color range: easy to find matte, glossy and specialty finishes.
  • Biodegradable base resin: less environmental guilt for failed drafts.
  • Fast print speeds: forgiving at 50–80 mm/s, great for learning.

The downside is mechanical: PLA is brittle and softens around 60 °C. Don't use it for car parts, outdoor items or load-bearing brackets. For toys, desk organizers, prototypes and decorative prints, it's perfect.

First-print PLA settings that work

Don't overthink the slicer. These conservative settings will get 90% of PLA prints to stick and finish cleanly:

Beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Printing too fast: slow down to 50 mm/s until you know the printer.
  • Dirty bed: clean with isopropyl alcohol before every print.
  • Wrong first-layer gap: level the bed and set Z-offset carefully; most failures start here.
  • Buying "mystery" filament: inconsistent diameter causes jams. Look for ±0.02 mm tolerance and vacuum sealing.
  • Storing filament in the open: especially in humid climates, PLA will eventually degrade. Seal the bag.

When to move up to PETG

Move to PETG when your prints need to survive real use: impact, moderate heat, or outdoor exposure. PETG prints at 230–250 °C with a 70–80 °C bed. It is more stringy than PLA and a little harder to dial in, but it produces much stronger parts.

Good first PETG projects: a phone stand, a tool hook, a drone part, or a replacement bracket. Start with a single color, dry the spool first, and reduce cooling fan speed to 30–50% for better layer adhesion.

Silk PLA: great for motivation, not for structure

Silk PLA looks incredible — a shiny, metallic finish straight off the printer. It prints almost like regular PLA and is a fun way to make gifts or display pieces. The catch: it is more brittle and shows layer lines differently. Use it for decorative prints, not functional parts, until you understand how it behaves on your machine.

What to look for when buying filament

Not all filament is equal. Two spools with the same color can print completely differently. Before you buy, check:

  • Diameter tolerance: ±0.02 mm or tighter is ideal. Loose tolerance causes jams and uneven extrusion.
  • Vacuum sealing: factory-sealed spools arrive dry; loose spools may already be wet.
  • Spool winding: neat, even winding feeds smoothly; tangled or crossed filament causes mid-print failures.
  • Material consistency: batch-stable color and diameter matter if you reorder the same SKU.
